Mulching is what some would call the "painting" of your yard. It is a great outdoor project that yields a high appeal and reward without costing you an arm and a leg.

A good layer of mulch is very beneficial to the health of the plants, trees, and shrubs that are in the bed.  Mulch is often used around the roots of trees or shrubs for multiple reasons.   The first reason is that when provided a good layer of mulch, the plants main roots are not as exposed and vulnerable to damage from other maintenance, such as lawn mowing.  Another great characteristic of mulch is its terrific ability to insulate; this is especially great in areas like Virginia where we have hot summers and frigid winters.  Last but not least, mulch provides as an excellent moisture retainer, holding water which is vital to the life of the plants around it.

Even though mulch may be one of the best, most practical dressings for your yard, there are still other options.

Leaf Mulch, Top Soil, Aggregates (Pebbles and Gravel), and River Rocks are great alternatives depending on your preference!
